Medias Used or Areas of Interest: Ceramics
|
Ruth works mostly with a low fire clay body, coiling or slabbing each piece, and making slip cast multiples of some. She uses neutral, subtle tones with her glazing to create minimalist, contemporary, organic pieces. She is highly inspired by the beauty of Marin, California, where she lives, and credits it for the calm, simplicity and subtlety of color in her work.
Surrounded by a family of artists, writers, musicians and teachers, Ruth grew up close to Cambridge, England. After obtaining a degree in graphic design in Canterbury, England, Ruth worked as a graphic designer in Londons West End for five years. In 1992 she moved to California. She made the transition to ceramics in the late 1990s, when she created her own studio.
Ruth produces a variety of work in clay. She hand-builds, with coils, one-of-a-kind minimalist sculptures and sculptural vessels in low fire white clay. The pieces are either underglazed or glazed to give varying degrees of texture and come in pale whites, celadon, grays and neutrals. Her slip cast bottles, vases and lamps are formed from coil-built originals. They are produced in low fire white clay and hand-glazed in earth, gray and mossy tones.
Ruth has pieces in various private collections in London, Los Angeles, New York and the San Francisco Bay area, and has undertaken a number of private commissions for both individuals and interior designers.
