FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS

“I love experimenting and exploring surface treatment and shapes. Pewter is very versatile. When people say, ‘I usually don’t like pewter but this is so different,’ I feel I’ve succeeded. I want to pull pewter away from its stereotype.” Rebecca was born in Boulder, Colorado and raised in Akron, Ohio. She attended Allegheny College but graduated with a B.F.A. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1972. She received pewter spinning, fabrication and casting instruction in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada in 1972 and then worked for a jeweler and lived in Marblehead, Massachusetts from 1972 to 1975. She returned to Ohio and established The Pewter Shop in 1975, basing some work on traditional designs and making her own designs and molds for spinning and casting. She moved to Kansas City in 1981 and maintained The Pewter Shop until late 1986 when she moved her equipment to her house and began working there while raising her son who was born in spring 1987. In the mid 1990s she began experimenting with contemporary designs and techniques. “They’ve been well received, and I’m having a wonderful time,” she says.
