Harry and Wendy Besett
Medias Used or Areas of Interest: Glass

"Our enameled pieces are very special to us. Each piece begins with a small, clear glass 'blank' made by Harry. While it is at room temperature, layer upon layer of enamel is worked onto the surface to create the imagery. Once cured, the small three-dimensional painting is encased in molten glass. Because the ultimate shape of the piece is given by Harry after the imagery is applied, the painting gets expanded along with the glass and the final imagery is unpredictable. The material as applied is opaque but in the finished work is often translucent. Sometimes, the finished pieces are a disaster. Other times, the paintings are much more interesting than they otherwise would have been. My background with pottery glazes makes me comfortable with an approach in which the final result of a piece looks quite different from the work in progress."
First introduced in 1996, the surface treatment imagery applied by Wendy combined with Harry's innovative techinical approach of layering glass and enamel results in a unique and fresh style. The work you will see is the culmination of years of experience and technical development. Because of the perilous process involved in making this body of work, each piece is one-of-a-kind and should be appreciated as such.
