Amy Elswick began working with ceramics while a student at Berea College in Kentucky. She worked as an apprentice in the ceramics studio from 1987 - 1991. The well-known craft marketing program at Berea College encouraged students to consider how to make a career from their craft. The program was invaluable for the lessons taught in clay techniques and marketing skills
After graduation and some travel, Amy returned to her hometown of Louisville, KY with a great need and desire to get back to clay work. She took classes as well as taught at the Metro Art Center and Beechmont Center in Louisville. Simultaneously, she met Dana Major and Sergei Isupov and began working as a studio artist for them at 9 Pines Art. Amy used this experience to refine her technique as well as gaining the learning experience of how to run a successful wholesale/retail studio. The natural progression of these events lead to Amy establishing her own business in 1998: Clay House Pots.
Currently, her work revolves around her production line of functional pottery. Amy uses both wheel and handbuilding techniques to create interesting and utilitarian pieces. The motivation is for the art to convey a sense of festivity and celebration in hopes of bring joy into the everyday realm. This is accomplished not only through the design of a piece, but also through the glaze palette and combinations of texture and patterns.
"My philosophy toward my art is: use it and enjoy it!"
