6th Annual El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft Celebrated its 6th Annual El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Event with Altars, Art Exhibitions, and Free Community Activities
The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (KMAC), with generous support from Brown-Forman, Daniel Maye, TJ Maxx, Lowe’s and Hispanic Latino Coalition of Louisville, is pleased to present its 6th annual El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. From October 1 until November 16th, KMAC will display intricately decorated altars created by a variety of Louisville organizations and artists, including a public altar that is open for personal contributions, altars that honor artists, including Frida Kahlo, altar memorials for “ghost bikes,” and altars for historical figures.
KMAC will also display an altar created by the University of Louisville’s Latin American and Latino Studies Program (LALS) that pays tribute to community leaders who made a lasting impact on Louisville and on the University of Louisville. With support from KMAC, Brown-Forman, UofL’s Office of Community Engagement, UofL faculty, students, staff, and members of the community, the 2011 LALS altar will remember the following four leaders: Dr. Lilialyce Akers, Ann Braden, Dr. David Hershberg, and Woodford R. Porter, Sr. Brief biographies of these leaders are attached.
On Friday, November 4 from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. during the First Friday Trolley Hop, KMAC will celebrate El Dia de los Muertos with authentic Mexican food from Los Aztecas available for purchase, a cash bar featuring the Paloma, a Brown-Forman signature tequila drink, and the following FREE activities for all ages:
