Kentucky artists such as Tom Pfannerstill, Frank Weisberg and Ron
Isaacs have long been known for their uncanny knack in being able to reproduce
objects in wood, clay and paint that convince the viewer that what they are seeing is actually what it appears to be. Upon closer
inspection the viewer comes to understand that the skills of the artist have
given an impression of a reality that does not.
Trompe L'Oeil is an art
technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical
illusion that the depicted object really exists, instead of being a mere
representation. The name is derived from French for 'trick the eye';
tromper - to deceive and l'oeil - the eye.
The works of the artists included in this
exhibition are masterpieces of illusion, and highlight exquisite control over
both materials and colors.
