Lewis Knauss Landscape Accumulation
Main Philadelphia, PA fiber, straw, thread 16" x 12" x 6"

Philadelphia fiber artist Lewis Knauss’ work reflects a return to the landscape. Each image is created thread by thread, line by line allowing them to be interpreted as landscape textures which are naturally created blade by blade, leaf by leaf. Each meticulous piece marks a moment in time, or a memory from a place where Knauss was once connected. From Ohio to Saratoga Springs, New York, Philadelphia and Colorado to the enchanting deserts of the Southwest, Knauss becomes one with each landscape. By tending to details and noticing subtle changes he becomes part of rather than apart from his surroundings.

Knauss is inspired by nature's visual beauty-its colors, patterns, textures, and density. Using a variety of materials such as linen, hemp, reeds, beads, pins, and acrylic paint, Knauss creates small-scale abstractions that are interpretations of the landscape. His works are intricately knotted and woven, built element by element and thread by thread.

Knauss is interested in the essence of nature and the intimate relationship between nature and humanity. His works make universal references to meadows, bales of hay, riverbeds, or the horizon. It is this familiarity that allows the viewer to contemplate, to make associations, and to remember their own meditations on the landscape.

Knauss received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. He served as acting chair of the fiber department at Tyler School of Art, and is on the faculty of the Moore College of Art and Design and Philadelphia University.
