KMA+D Endowment Campaign
|
Who:
The Kentucky Museum of Arts + Design
(KMA+D), located
at 715 W.
Main Street in historic downtown Louisville. The Kentucky Museum of Arts + Design
is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to continue the art
and
craft heritage of Kentucky through the support and education of craft
artists
and education of the public. The
Foundation is supported in part by
the
Fund for the Arts and the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency of the
Education,
Arts and Humanities Cabinet.
What:
A $5.5 million Capital Campaign launched to purchase and renovate
715-717 W.
Main Street as KMA+D's new headquarters and permanent home.
The new location
consists of a 27,000 square foot property in a restored four-story building
enhanced by a 42' cast iron facade in the heart of Louisville’s West
Main
Street Historic district. The
money being raised is also to increase the organization’s
endowment fund. Where:
Kentuckiana When:
The Campaign was announced on Friday, October 12, 2001. The grand
opening is Thursday, April 3,
2003. Why: In order to continue to serve over 125,000 patrons a year and to expand educational and exhibition programming, KMA+D must increase its available space and resources. By moving into the new building, KMA+D will considerably increase the level of all areas of its programming thereby continuing to advance its mission of enhancing the craft heritage of Kentucky through education, exhibitions and craft sales. The money raised through the capital campaign will also help to increase KMA+D’s Endowment Fund. Recent studies
document that students with high levels of arts participation outperform
“arts-poor” students by almost every measure.
The gains are more
significant among students who have not been exposed to an
“arts-rich” curriculum than
for those who have participated in an arts rich program. (J. Catterall,
UCLA) These creative
approaches are critically needed for Kentucky’s children most at risk.
Over 80% of the children served by KMA+D's
education programs are at risk and KMA+D enjoys seeing evidence of their
success. The new facility
will more than quadruple the space for education and
permit KMA+D to impact the lives of many more children each year.
If you would like to help support and educate Kentucky artists and help educate Kentuckiana schoolchildren by contributing to Kentucky Museum of Arts + Design capital campaign, please
