BLACKACRE ART WEEK

at Blackacre Nature Preserve

Grades 6-8
July 26th-30th, 9:15am-3:15pm

Join us as KMAC presents Summer 2010 Art Week at Blackacre State Nature Preserve, located just off of Tucker Station Road in eastern Jefferson County.  This intense and fun-filled hands-on art camp for creative middle school students interested in art takes place in one of the city's most beautiful outdoor facilities.  Participants will take part in four different workshops designed and taught by Kentucky's finest artists.  These workshops will explore a variety of materials and techniques as well as the beauty of the surrounding nature.

This year's workshops include:

Hound Dog Press - Printmaking

While at camp, students will be given the opportunity to produce their own linoleum cuts and run an edition of prints on an original table top platen press dating from the 1930's. Students will cut their own blocks with hand tools, print them, and then a portfolio exchange will take place among the campers.

Hound Dog Press is a Louisville-based letterpress print shop owned and operated by Nick Baute and Robert Ronk.  Both graduated form the University of Kentucky with BFA's with a focus in printmaking.  Nick and Robert continue to use the traditional methods of hand set metal type, linoleum cuts, and wood engravings to produce modern invitations, business cards, posters and their own art prints.

Mary Margaret Carlton - Natural bookmaking

Create cloth books incorporating monoprints with leaves, dyeing with tea, binding with sticks and other natural elements.  Students will also learn various sewing techniques to embellish their books.

Mary Margaret Carlton graduated from Georgetown College with a degree in Sculpture and Art History. Her personal sculpture addresses social and economical issues and focuses on recycling and reusing materials. She also works in textiles, books, mixed media, graphic design and site specific installations. She has worked with multiple schools and organizations in Louisville on different art projects and enjoys using art to make a difference in the community. She currently works at the Louisville Visual Art Association.

Anthony Redfeather Nava - Nature Jewelry

Using Native American techniques and nature as inspiration, students will use all natural components to make cordage, beads and plant dyes to create a necklace.  Some of the materials will come from the nature preserve itself.  Mr. Redfeather will also teach about the plants and wildlife on the preserve.

Anthony is a skilled master beadworker, leathercrafter and jeweler.  He constantly combines traditions and ideas to form his own artistic style. Anthony creates and plays traditional flutes and hand drums. As a young adult he was taught peyote stitch from his grandmother Dorothy. He began with simple loomwork, and later expanded his beadwork expertise as other members of his family and community taught him other variations of beadwork.

Brett Marshall - Photography

The Blackacre photo sessions will be an exploration of not only the art of making compelling photographs but also an exploration of the nature and landscapes that surround this beautiful nature preserve. Participants will also learn of the importance of the camera as a means to preserve history through documenting each other as well as the history of Blackacre itself.

Photography teacher Brett Marshall has spent the past six years working in newspapers and independently as a photojournalist and multi-media producer. Marshall has served as an instructor for several documentary photography workshops in Eastern Kentucky as well as two years as an educator at Central Michigan University. His work ranges from daily community journalism to environmental issues centered on mountain top removal and alternative energy.
